"For this eagerly awaited exhibition, her largest todate, Ms. Chang (who was born in San Francisco and works in Los Angeles) has created an integrated, multidisciplinary installation of mostly new work that reframes her early investigations of identity and its straying boundaries. Engrossing and deeply moving, “The Wandering Lake 2009-2017,” at the Queens Museum刘学周 , mostly shifts attention away from the artist’s body, relying on moving water as a metaphor for concerns ranging from gender fluidity and internet surfing to climate change and migration. Curated by Hitomi Iwasaki, the show touches on a child’s birth and a father’s death, as well as more global losses — of languages, cultures and even the geographical features that shape them. A running theme, sometimes elusive but potent nonetheless, is material and psychological instability, and meaning that spills the boundaries of individual works. "

"The associative parallel that Chang draws between different types of loss – such as her father’s passing and the fact that Soviet irrigation has caused 80% of the Aral Sea to dry up – contributes to the project’s scattered and mysterious quality. But such leaps also account for some of the project’s greatest strengths. The variety of research sources, artistic medium, and conceptual and emotional registers encompassed inThe Wandering Lakeallows Chang to plumb the depths of Anthropocenic change in ways at once personal and political. This approach is of a piece with the vanguard of ecological theory, in which writers such as Timothy Morton and Jane Bennett emphasize the interconnectedness of the world’s cultural and biological systems. Chang’s leaps across geography, theme, method and scale create a complex and layered aesthetic ecosystem whose diverse elements exist on a continuum withone another, even at their most seemingly disparate."

NYR Daily
“Throughout this exhibition, Chang casts herself as a global explorer, but in contrast to adventurers of the past – male, European, colonialist – she is humbled and saddened by her discoveries. We are drawn into her journey by her method of always connecting her documentation of these sites to a visceral personal experience. Resisting the tendency to romanticize these locales, she incorporates explicit body functions that may be off-putting or even nauseating. But by doing so, she is able to convey her horror at the destruction she is sighting all over the planet, a finding that she hopes we too will find heartbreaking. ”
